HOW TO DESCRIBE CAUSAL RELATIONSHIPS

已经    (yǐ jīng) already [adverb]

我已经知道了    I already know

后来    (hòu lái) later, afterwards [pertains only to an action or situation in the past.]

开始...,后来...        At the start..., afterwards…
  • This structure usually contains "就" in the second clause to emphasize connection: the causal/conditional relationship between two actions.
  • This structure usually has a "了" at the end to emphasize the change of state--see below!

了 [change of state]:
  • 了 has many uses. You probably first learned 了 as a particle that tells you an action is completed, which is also known as "了1." However, this is not about that use of 了; instead, it is about indicating a change of state.
  • The "change of state" 了 is often called "了2", to distinguish it from "了1" [for a completed action].
  • It's also called "sentence-final 了", because it usually appears at the end of a sentence or statement.
  • [New Situation] + 了
  • In other words, there is now a new situation, or there is about to be a new situation. This whole "change of state" idea can take numerous forms. Here are some helpful examples.
    • 爸爸今年50岁了。= Dad is 50 years old this year.
      • (Seems like just a year ago he was only 49! The new situation is that he's older now.)
    • 我男朋友找到新工作了。= My boyfriend found a new job.
      • (This is a big change for sure! The new situation is that he has a different job.)
  • See the Chinese Grammar Wiki  or the East Asian Student website for more details

开始我觉得很难,后来,王朋常常帮我练习中文,就觉得不难了。    [At the start I thought it was hard, (but) afterwards, Wang Peng often helped me practice Chinese, so I thought it wasn't hard.]

Sentences:
  • 告诉我明天要考试,我说我已经知道了。
  • 开始她觉得中文很酷,后来因为老师教中文教得很不好,所以她很不喜欢中文了。
  • 开始我觉得很难,后来,王朋常常帮我练习中文,就觉得不难了。
