有    (yǒu) to have
  • This is a verb. “sub + 有 + obj”

没有    (méi yǒu) don't have
  • The opposite of “有” is always “没有”!
  • Never use “不”.
  • Ex: 他没有女儿 = he doesn't have a daughter

一    (yī) one

个    (gè) measure word for common objects
  • A measure word (MW) is a kind of classifier that is used together with a noun. Measure words are very important in Chinese. Anytime you want to count something or indicate the quantity of a noun, you should insert a measure word before the noun.
  • Structure: number + MW + noun
  • Structure: demonstrative pronoun (i.e. 那,这) + MW + noun
  • English also has measure words. For example, you don’t say, “One paper,” you say “One piece of paper.” Piece is the measure word. Chinese measure words are the same, except they’re more important. You should use a measure word anytime you count or quantify a noun in Chinese.

一个人    one person
