A + 是 + A, 可是/但是...    Although... yet...
  • "A is A [i.e. It's true that A], but..."
  • This structure implies that the speaker accepts the validity of a certain point of view but wishes to offer an alternative perspective or emphasize a different aspect of the matter.
  • structure: “sub + [adj/verb] + 是 + [adj/verb], 可是/但是…”
  • 1. 有的衣服便宜是便宜,但是牌子不好。= It’s true that some clothes are cheap, but the brands are not good.
  • 2. 学音乐好是好,可是以后找工作不太容易。= It’s true that studying music is good/fun, but it’s not easy to find a job afterwards.

难道    (nán dào) rhetorical question, do you mean to say; could it be that...?
  • structure: "难道+rhetorical statement+吗?"
  • NOTE 1: this structure is used in rhetorical questions. Rhetorical questions require some kind of context, so 难道 cannot be used out of the blue.
  • NOTE 2: 难道 can be used before after the subject, but the 难道 question always takes the yes/no 吗 form.
  • 我不同意。难道你喜欢看雪梅穿不好看的衣服吗?= “I don't agree. Could it be that you like to see Lin Xuemei wear ugly clothes?”
