压 (yā) to press; to hold down; to weigh down

压在一起        pressed together

压坏     to crush

被 (bèi) by [passive voice]
  • STRUCTURE: receiver of the action + 被 + agent of the action + verb + other element (complement/了, etc.)
  • In passive sentences, the object of an action becomes the subject of the sentence, and what would have been the subject of the normal (active voice) sentence, the "doer" of the action, becomes secondary, and may or may not be included in the passive sentence.
  • Or to write it another way: "Subject + 被 + Doer + Verb Phrase"
  • If we want to, we can also omit the Doer to make the meaning even more passive: "Subject + 被 + Verb Phrase"
  • The "被" and "把" structures are similar but emphasize different aspects of the action.

我的功课被狗吃了 my homework was eaten by my dog

你网球拍被压坏了 your tennis racket was crushed

下面的人被压坏了 The people underneath are crushed

把 sentence
  • STRUCTURE: subject + 把 + object + verb + other element (complement/了/etc.)
  • The 把 (bǎ) sentence focuses on the result or influence of an action.
  • Why use a "把 sentence" at all? 把 is used to highlight what happens to the object (called "disposal"). Disposal simply means that something happened to the object and it was affected.
  • -use 把 to talk about things being put in places
  • -use 把 to talk about things being changed
  • -use 把 to talk about things being finished or used up
  • If the verb in a Chinese sentence is followed by the prepositional phrase 在 or 到, the sentence MUST be written using the a 把 structure. Thus, 把 is required when talking about things being put in places.
  • The "被" and "把" structures are similar but emphasize different aspects of the action.
