  • We will learn two basic direction complements: "来" (signifying movement toward the speaker) and "去" (signifying movement away from the speaker).

 verb + 了    (le)
  • “了” is an extremely important particle in Chinese, with many uses. Here we focus on the usage verb + 了 which expresses “the completion of an action”
  • STRUCTURE: subject + verb + 了 + object
    • 了 is often used to describe a past action, but not always. The use of 了 is NOT same as English past tense. 了 indicates the occurrence or completion of an action or event.
    • See p. 137-139 in the textbook.
    • http://resources.allsetlearning.com/chinese/grammar/Expressing_completion_with_%22le%22 for more details.
    • see http://resources.allsetlearning.com/chinese/grammar/Uses_of_%22le%22 for even more details.

Tense vs. Aspect
  • Tense is about time relative to when we’re speaking. It expresses whether something happened before now, is happening now, or will happen after the present moment.
  • Aspect is about time relative to when the event occurred. It’s about whether or not an action was completed in the time frame we’re talking about.
  • Tenses are past, present and future. Aspects are things like perfective, continuous or imperfective.
  • English verbs express aspect and tense. Consider the difference between “I ate”, “I was eating” and “I have eaten”. They are all past tense, but the aspect in each one is different. There are different levels of completeness. This is what aspect is about.
  • Mandarin tends to just express aspect. The main way it does this is with the aspect particle 了 (le). 了 grammar is pretty difficult, but just remember that it’s about aspect and not tense. 了 can appear in sentences about the past, present and future.

Word Order with 了:
  1. “verb + 了”        describes an action that has happened, usually at a specific time
  2. “verb + object + 了” appears AFTER a verb + object when the object is not specific (i.e. no modifiers)
    • 在高文中家,他们认识了高文中的姐姐。= At Gao Wen Zhong’s house, they met Gao Wen Zhong’s older sister.
    • 昨天晚上你去打球了吗?= Yesterday night you went to play ball?
  3. “verb + 了 + object” appears BETWEEN a verb+object when the object is specific (i.e. is modified by a number, adjective, etc.)
    • 他请王朋喝茶,王朋喝了两杯。= He invites Wang Peng to drink tea, Wang Peng drank two cups.
    • 李友不喝茶,只喝了一杯水。= Li You doesn’t drink tea, only drinks a cup of water.
    • 明天我吃了晚饭去看电影。= Tomorrow I’ll go see a movie after I have eaten dinner.

没有 + verb [past]
  • to say that an action did not happen in the past, you must use "没有."
  • DO NOT use either "不" or "了."
  • STRUCTURE: subject + 没有 +  verb + 了 + object
  • 我今天没吃饭。= Today I didn’t eat.
  • 昨天我没有听音乐。= Yesterday I didn’t listen to music.
