几        (jǐ) how many
  • This is also a “question pronoun,” like 谁 or 什么.
    • In Chinese, question words go in the same place in the sentence as they would in the answer to the question.
    • The word order never changes! Super simple.
  • Examples:
    • Q: 你的家有几口人?= Your family has how many people?
    • A: 我的家有三口人。= My family has three people.

口        measure word for number of family members (kǒu)
  • 口 is also a radical that means mouth. Literally, each member of your family is another “mouth” to feed.
  • It’s okay to use the measure word “个” as well. In fact, many Chinese people use “个” for almost everything (even when it’s not technically correct).
  • 白英爱的家有十口人。= Bai Ying Ai’s family has ten people.

你家有几口人?    your family has how many people?

我家有五口人    my family has five people

和    (hé) and
  • used when linking nouns, i.e. Person A 和 Person B
    • 我家有五口人。爸爸,妈妈,姐姐,弟弟,和我。= My family has five people. Dad, mom, older sister, younger brother, and me.
    • 王朋和李友是老师 = Wang Peng and Li You are teachers
  • 和 vs. 也
    • There are a few ways to say “and” in Chinese. “也” is by the far the most common, especially when connecting sentences or clauses together. “sub + 也 + verb”
    • “和” is used in a much more limited set of situations. “和” is used only when making a list of nouns. You cannot link verbs with “和”.
    • The general rule here is, try to use “和” as little as possible. It is extremely overused by Chinese learners.
    • Don’t use it except in the very specific above situation.
