You may choose your own project theme, idea, or format. Some suggestions follow:
Suggestions:
- Create a multimedia project to demonstrate your mastery of the language, content, and objectives of Level 28.
- You may choose your own project idea.
- Your project must be creative, compelling, and professional.
- Your project must involve a native speaker of Chinese.
- You may work individually or in groups.
Project Guidelines:
Overall Topic: Working (打工)
General Requirements:
- Compare American and Chinese attitudes toward 1) personal finances and 2) working while in school. Include the following topics:
- Compare American and Chinese personal income.
- Compare American and Chinese spending patterns.
- Compare the cost of American and Chinese education (including loans, scholarships, etc).
- Compare the pressures (academic, financial, etc.) facing American and Chinese students.
- Compare the attitudes of American and Chinese students toward working part-time while in school.
- You may also choose to compare Chinese attitudes toward those of another country (instead of America).
- Must score 90% on the Level 28 Project Rubric.
Presentation Requirements:
- Give a formal presentation of your project to the teacher.
- Introduce your project (in Chinese).
- Explain what it's about.
- Explain why you chose this project.
- Explain what you did in the project.
- Summarize the content of your project and/or play video clips. 3 minutes or less per person in the group.
- Must score 90% on the Level 28 Project Rubric.
Language Requirements:
- Must use most of the vocabulary words in Level 28.
- Must include the following key grammar structures:
- Directional complements suggesting result: verb + 上来/下来/出来/etc.
- 来 connecting two verb phrases: verb phrase 1 + 来 + verb phrase 2
- Adverb 可: sub + 可 + verb…
- 说到…
- 受到 + abstract noun
- 减轻 + abstract noun
- 取得 + abstract noun
- sub + 嫌 + clause
- 不是A,就是B
- 多 + adj…!
- There is no minimum word count.
Project Ideas:
You may choose your own project theme, idea, or format. Some suggestions follow:
- Story Quest: Totally Broke!: write an illustrated storybook about a Chinese student at Stevenson School who has no money to pay tuition... and must take desperate measures. Use details from the life of a native Chinese speaker.
- Campus Interview: interview a native Chinese speaker about general Chinese attitudes toward personal finances and working while in school. Have an in-depth discussion. Film your interview.
- Movie: The Pauper and the Prince: in a group, film a movie about two kinds of students, a Frugal Student and a Spendthrift Student. One day, the Spendthrift Student asks to borrow money from the Frugal Student... be creative!
- Research Paper: Working: with a native Chinese speaker, research the differences between the American and Chinese education system. Compare typical Chinese high schools to typical American high schools as well as to Stevenson School. What's the tuition like? What are the pressures? Do high school students work part-time? Why? Include photos and other multimedia.
- Social Media Chat: using social media, have an in-depth conversation with your Chinese friends about the pressures facing students from different countries, including financial pressures and the pros and cons of working while in school. Record this conversation.
Suggestions:
- Please clear your project idea with the teacher before you start working on it.
- Submit a written draft of your project to the teacher for feedback. (Google Docs only).
- Don't wait until the last moment! Begin thinking about your project as soon as you start a new level.
- Find a reliable native speaker of Chinese to work with.
